13.1 Unexpectedly

Yesterday morning, I woke up at 5:15am and met my running buddy, Janna at Griffith Park at 6am.  On my way out the door, I’d eaten a piece of bread with peanut butter on it, and by the time I got to the park, I needed to find a bathroom.  So, before meeting Janna, I high tailed it to the nearest bathroom and prayed for two things.  One, that there would be toilet paper, and two, that there would be no murderers or animals in the bathroom. Thankfully for me, my prayers were answered. When I first met with Janna we agreed to just see how far we could go today. I had no real milage goal other than “maybe 6 miles?” We first went along our usual route, up a giant hill, down the giant hill, around the golf course and were heading out toward the road when we discovered a side street we hadn’t noticed before.  It lead us up onto a trail that took us back around to near the golf course and we just kept going.  By the time we got to the Pony Rides, we had hit a little over 6 miles. Janna then told me that her goal for the day was a half marathon, 13.1 miles. We had tried to keep our pace at conversational, which for me meant really slow, but my legs felt good.  My left knee was feeling ok, but my right was starting to twinge a bit, and I had done a lot of power walking. So, knowing it was at least another 4 miles back to our cars, I said I’d see how I felt once we hit 10 miles.  I wasn’t feeling super awesome, my hips were getting really tight which made my IT band really tight, which made my right knee sore, but I toughed it out, walking almost the whole thing.  We eventually finished our 13.1 miles, and then spent a good 15 minutes stretching.  I’m still not proud of the time it took us to complete the milage, 3:34, it’s a whole hour slower than I finished my last half marathon race, but I was proud of the fact that we covered the distance. I kept reminding myself that it has been 8 months since I last covered that kind of distance, and being mostly out of commission for several weeks hasn’t helped either.  Next weekend, I’m going to lobby for doing 5-6 miles and then we’ll try for 14 or 15 the following Saturday.

When you start to feel your muscles tighten up during a run, do you stop and stretch or power through?  We stopped to stretch twice, but I have a feeling I may actually also need a little extra arch support in my shoes.

This morning I’m a bit stiff and sore, but not nearly as bad as I thought I’d be.  I think the extra stretching, nap and icing I did when I got home helped.  Also, the ibuprofen.

Last night my parents took Travis and me out to an early birthday dinner. I chose Flemming’s Steakhouse  in El Segundo because I’d never been, love steak, and had heard good things about it.  It did not disappoint, although the dining room was really loud which was kind of annoying. The food was great, the service was wonderful and we all left with full tummies.

Now, I’m off to breakfast with my parents at their hotel, then to dance to help and finally we’re having a friendfamily dinner in the Marina tonight.  Travis and I are bringing a Greek Salad.  :) Hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend.

Yesterday, I decided I was going to register for the Disneyland Half Marathon this coming September.  You see, as I’ve mentioned before, not having anything to train for right away has been causing my motivation to wane, in a big way.  So, I figured at least registering for the one race I do have planned this year would be a step in the right direction.

Then, I saw the saddest words ever.  Disneyland Half Marathon 2011: SOLD OUT

SOLD OUT!! It’s only March! Last year, I don’t think we registered for this race until sometime in May or even June!  So, I added my name to the waitlist, but this is freaking me out.  It’s possible I won’t get to run the Disney half this year!

I knew I should have registered back when it first opened! Have you ever missed a race deadline, or had to waitlist yourself for a race?

Pssst. Did you happen to catch Clare’s guest post here on  Saturday while I was galavanting all over downtown Phoenix?  If you missed it, you should check it out. Clare is the bee’s knees.

After finishing my second half marathon, and slamming out a new PR which was 22 minutes faster than my first half marathon, I’ve had a few people ask me what I did differently.

At first, I wasn’t really sure, in fact, I had been nervous about this race because I felt like I wasn’t as prepared.  We skipped (me and my training buddies, but mostly me,) a lot of our longer runs, sometimes due to weather, sometimes due to not feeling well.  While I was preparing for the Oireachtas (Irish dance,) I had to skip several of my long runs because my knees were in a lot of pain, and I wanted to play it safe. Just before this race though, I felt like I hadn’t done enough quality long runs, and went in thinking “Well, anything better than my first 2:59 will be good.”

What I hadn’t realized was that, while I didn’t have as many quality distance runs under my belt, all of my shorter weekday runs were done on a treadmill which kept my pace consistent.  Something I had definitely not done before. I’ve always strugged with maintaining pace during my outdoor runs.   Also, my 8  miler, and 10 miler were done on treadmills, with consistent paces kept for both runs.  I guess I really underestimated how the combination of controlled pace training and an almost entirely flat course would affect my run.  While I may not have trained as “long,” I definitely feel like I trained smarter.

While treadmill running isn’t nearly as exciting, or scenic as outdoor running, it’s certainly served me well during this training.  We’re taking this week/weekend off (I’ll probably squeeze in light cardio on Friday,) but I’ll be starting to put together an even better training plan for my next half.  I’m hoping to do either the San Diego Rock n’ Roll half (June 4th) or the Seattle Rock n’ Roll half (Juen 25th). I have friends getting married in June so it will end up being determined by that.  Then, I definitely want to do Disney’s  half again this September.  It appears I have caught the racing bug.  Have you?

Race Recap: P.F. Chang’s Rock n’ Roll 1/2 Marathon – Phoenix

We Did It!

Read my Disney Half Marathon Race Re-Cap here.

All of Team O’Dowd finished their respective marathon and half marathon, but let’s start from the beginning, shall we?

On Friday, my two running buddies and I each took a half day at work, so we were on the road to Phoenix around 12:45pm.  Our first stop was lunch at In-n-Out in Baldwin Park, which also happens to be the location of In-n-Out University.  Yes, such a thing exists. Who knew?

I went with my standard order (which I sadly, don’t eat very often because Travis hates In-n-Out,) the double double with fries.

Seriously, In-n-Out University.  Then, after some driving around in circles, because in Baldwin Park, you have to go west on the 10 to get to the eastbound 10 again (which doesn’t make any sense at all,) we were back on the road.

Around 7pm we made it to Quartzite and stopped for gas and bathroom break. Finally, about 9:30pm we made it to my cousin’s house, and after staying up for a bit to talk we were all ready for bed.  I got to sleep in my cousin’s son’s race car bed, which he promised would make me run faster.  The race car bed was insanely comfortable, seriously. I slept so well this weekend.

Sadly, I didn’t get any pictures from Saturday’s adventures, I forgot my camera at my cousin’s house :(   But, on Saturday, we ran some errands, went down to the Expo where we picked up our Bibs and I bought a new hat to wear.  We also sampled some stuff, like pasta, Gu products, Cliff Bars, The Stick (which I am currently regretting not purchasing,) and then had dinner at Sam’s Cafe in the Arizona Center (Tina and Mal also went there during their trip to Phoenix) I ordered the grilled tuna with wild rice and roasted vegetables. It was good, but the veggies were almost all peppers, which I tried to stay away from to avoid getting heart burn the night before the race.

We got home a little later than we had originally hoped, so all of us jumped right into bed and were asleep so we could be up at 4:30am.  We had decided to go over with my cousin (she ran the full marathon,) early to avoid having to worry about getting to the start area on time.  It was kind of cold, so I wore a hoodie, and gloves to check before we started the race.

After we waved Colleen (my cousin) off to her corral, we waited to meet my other cousin, Jen and her brother, Robert, before we had to get lined up for the half marathon.  We spent most of this time talking about how cold we were, and hoping about to stay warm.  We also spent this time using the really disgusting port-a-potties and getting nervous.  When it was finally time to line up we were actually all in line for potties, and had to haul to the corrals.  Thankfully we had plenty of time (I was in corral 21, and Jen and her brother stayed with me there.)  I will say, the starting process was a lot faster and more efficient than Disney.  Once we were moving I tried to stay with Jen and Robert, but lost them even  before the first mile marker.  I wanted to pace myself and was noticing that attempting to keep up with them was having me running 9 minute miles, which is WAY too fast for me.  So, I held back, and just focused on moving forward.  I was still cold, my toes were a little numb, but I knew soon enough I’d be warmed up.

Nothing too exciting happened during the course, and I have to admit, I was disappointed with the bands on the course.  None of them seemed that exciting, and some were even playing really slow tempo songs. The energy on the course really couldn’t match that on the Disney course, but that was ok, because this course was mostly flat, really.  The only other downside I would point out is that the 1/2 course wasn’t very scenic until we got to Tempe.  But, really, I was so focused on keeping a pace somewhere between 10:45 and 12:00 that I wasn’t looking around a whole lot.

I’m not going to lie, there were moments during this race when I was really having a tough time.  I stopped to stretch around mile 8, and at mile 9, I was starting to worry I might not beat my previous half marathon time of 2:59.  That really disappointed me, and I started trying to focus on simply doing better than 2:59.  Originally, I had hoped I could pull out a 2:30 half, knowing that a 29 minute difference was crazy. When I hit mile 10 at a little under 2 hours, I knew it might be possible if I really hauled ass to get close to that 2:30 goal.  I did still have some difficulty running, and had to take quite a few speed walking breaks to keep going.

Right before mile 13, I saw my Uncle Peter and that gave me that last push I really needed to get my ass in gear.  As I came up to the finish line I started sprinting and ended up crossing the finish line at 2:37:18, blowing my previous PR out of the water!  I shaved a whole 22 minutes off my last time!!

I was ECSTATIC!

After I finished, I found Janna (one of my running buddies, I finished a few seconds before her,) and our boss! Her family is in Phoenix, and she was going to be there this weekend anyway, so she stopped by, hoping to find us as we finished.  She’s got the pictures from right after since my camera was in my checked bag, but it was SO nice to see her.  I was on such a high, I could hardly feel anything, but my legs did hurt.  My hips, my knees and my legs were SO tight.  I tried to grab a banana, but they were all gooey, which kind of turned my stomach.  So I kept moving (because moving hurt less than stopping,) and grabbed a frozen yogurt.  After picking up our bags we headed to the beer garden to meet up with everyone else, took some pictures with our celebratory post=race beer and headed to my cousin Jen’s for a party.

Janna, myself, Courtney post-run!  Courtney finished in 1:57 and change. She is a rockstar

Janna, me, Courtney and my cousin Colleen (who finished her first marathon in 3:56!!!)

I spent almost the entire time at the post-race celebration eating a hamburger, drinking a beer, and sitting down.  It was so nice to catch up with a lot of my family.  My mom grew up in Phoenix and all but one of her 8 siblings still live there.  There was a great collection of family and it felt good to relax and celebrate with everyone.  After the party, we all went back to Colleen’s, got in the hot tub, showered and iced our knees.  It was another early to bed and then we were back on the road this morning around 9:30am.

Now for the official break down from the website:

My Garmin mile breakdowns are as follows:

Oh, and also, just because we could, we ate this on the way home. Because we earned it.

I’m still on a bit of a high. I’m so incredibly proud of myself.  I’m kind of convinced that the amount of consistent paced, treadmill runs I did really helped my speed for this race.  We’re already thinking about our races for the rest of the year.  June will be either San Diego or Seattle (I’ve got a wedding in June to plan around,) and definitely doing the Disney again in September.  We’re also planning on squeezing in some 5 and 10ks to keep us pumped up.  :)

Fish, Take Two

Tonight’s dinner was a simple baked salmon with Trader Joe’s blended grain mix and some spinach.  We didn’t make enough spinach, clearly.  Have you ever underestimated the amount of spinach you needed to cook?

This dinner was really easy, Travis marinated the salmon in some Parmesan, garlic and basil flavored olive oil, then pan seared the fish before baking it in the oven.   Sadly, our beloved, inherited rice cooker seems to have died, as only the “warm” feature works now.  I am bummed. I really liked that rice cooker.

This fish was much tastier than last night’s.  I ended up bringing the leftovers from last night’s dinner to work for lunch today, and it wasn’t bad cold, and had a little more flavor, however the tuna was pretty dry.

After work, I hopped on the treadmill and did 3.45 miles in 45 minutes and it felt really good to be moving.  Then, when I got home, I discovered a package had arrived.

the Team O’Dowd t-shirts for the Phoenix Marathon and Half Marathon arrived!!  Above is the front of our t-shirts, with our team slogan “Pain now…Beer later.”

and this is the back!  The people running the half marathon get these 13.1 shirts, and my cousin who is running the full (and her family) are getting 26.2 shirts.  I am so excited now!

I used customink.com to make the shirts, and I couldn’t be happier with the process, or the results.  They were very user friendly from start to finish, and while the shirts ended up being a little more expensive than I had hoped (partially because we had a smaller order than I was hoping for,) they came out great!  A huge thank you to the folks at CustomInk.com for all your hard work. :)

Tough (run) Love

This morning I had a 12 miler on the schedule.  My second half-marathon is coming up in just two weeks, so today marked our final long run before the race. I was actually kind of excited about this run, because I wanted to really push myself and see what time I could finish 12 miles in to give me an idea of when I might be able to finish my half.  Sadly, this run not only turned into just 10.71 miles, it was a total train wreck of a run.

I tried to hydrate as much as possible yesterday, since I knew spending the day hungover wasn’t helping anything.  Sadly, I didn’t get enough hydration yesterday, and I could feel it this morning.  Waking up at 6am was rough, I didn’t sleep well, and it was cold and dark out.  However, I kept telling myself how much better I would feel once I was done.  I ate my peanut butter sandwich, packed up my stuff, and headed out to Griffith Park.

I met with one of my running buddies at 7am, and it was cold. I wore a long sleeved tech-tee, and a light weight windbreaker type jacket, long pants and had a hat and gloves and still felt super cold for the first two and a half miles.  We stretched a bit before we headed out, but I could already tell it was going to be a tough run.  Aside from the cold, my brain was working against me, constantly reminding me how cold I was.  I was also wearing my hydration belt today with my PowerBar Endurance drink mix, which I couldn’t seem to find a comfortable position for.  This whole training process for this half, I haven’t worn the water bottle with the belt, and it was really awkward and made for an uncomfortable first few miles.  I finally took the bottle out and carried it.

Los Angeles has had a ton of rain in the past few weeks, and most of the dirt trails we run were full of sticky mud, and holes in the path, so we cut across at one point and hit the paved road for the rest of the run.

At about the 3.5 mile mark is when things started to go downhill faster.  Suddenly I felt weird.  Not totally lightheaded, but close, and off balance slightly.  It was really kind of scary, so I spent a good portion of time walking starting then.  I wanted to keep pushing, but decided passing out in the middle of Griffith Park was worse than walking.   The other bummer is that while I use a Garmin device, my buddy uses an iPod with the Nike chip, and by the time my Forerunner said I’d hit 5 miles, her iPod said we’d gone over 6 miles.  Normally, I would have just pushed myself an extra mile to make the numbers on my Garmin total correctly, but I was starting to get really stiff and sore in my hips and knees and I still felt kind of wonky, so I just said forget it and turned around.

When I finally hit that mile 6 was when my stomach started acting funky, and I felt really gross and started burping.  Again, lots of walking.  I was so frustrated with myself, and thought about pulling an extra loop to get in that lost two miles, but my hips were so tight it was really painful, and then my hamstrings started to cramp.  I’d never experienced actual muscle cramping while I’d been running before and it was not pleasant.  I figured it was because I wasn’t hydrated enough.

I finally made it back to my buddy at the top of the trail and was so disappointed, but I had to remind myself, this was only one run.  Yes, it was my last long run, but, aside from a really difficult first 10 mile run back when I was training for the Disneyland Half, I’ve been lucky with my long runs.   So, I just keep telling myself that this was just ONE bad run, and it doesn’t mean I won’t be ready in two weeks.

Here’s how the run broke down on the Garmin

Total Distance: 10.71 miles
Total Time:  2:40:21
Avg. Pace: 14:58

Seeing that total time and average pace was rough, considering the 10 miles I did on Christmas Eve was so much stronger.  However, that was on a treadmill, with controlled temperatures, so maybe I shouldn’t have gotten so excited about those numbers before.

Mile 1: 18:21
Mile 2: 13:34
Mile 3: 13:25
Mile 4: 13:47
Mile 5: 12:37
Mile 6: 16:27
Mile 7: 14:13
Mile 8: 15:47
Mile 9: 15:01
Mile 10: 14:38
.71 nubbin : 17:00

I’m glad I went out this morning and got in a double digit distance, even if it wasn’t the strong 12 miles I was hoping for.  What do you do to get over having a bad run or workout session? For a lot of this run, I was feeling so gross I didn’t even listen to my iPod, which was kind of interesting.  Luckily in the park there’s a lot to look at which keeps the runs interesting, but I also have to say, it was kind of weird running outdoors again after the last two long runs on a treadmill.  I have to say, I missed the climate control of the gyms.

That’s What I Said, Booby Traps!

Cover of "The Goonies [UMD for PSP]"

We’re currently watching The Goonies which is one of Travis’ all time favorite movies ever in life. I am not 100% sold (shhhh don’t tell anyone, seriously, it could ruin my street cred;)

I was a bad blogger yesterday, and didn’t blog. At all. Oops :(

Just as an FYI, last night’s dinner was pasta and meatballs.  It was delicious, and easy, and then, when we were doing dishes, we discovered the pipe going from the second side of the sink into the pipe fell off.  We discovered this when I realized that my socks were wet, and I looked down to see a ton of water coming out from under the cabinet.  Just so you know, I had asked someone (not naming names or anything but it rhymes with Radish) to call the landlord when we first noticed our garbage disposal wasn’t working.  That someone, who’s name rhymes with Radish, never did this.  So, that person did most of the clean up.  Just sayin’

After work yesterday, I attempted to run the 3 miles I was supposed to run on Monday.  It didn’t go so well. I made it 1.08 before I decided to throw in the towel.  I tried to tell myself it was because I was being nice, there were people waiting for the machines, and as a staff member, I really should allow members to use the equipment, right?  That’s what I thought.

Today, I was determined to stick to the training plan, and do my 6 total miles with 4 miles at 11:30.  Determined, I tell you!  Halfway through the day, I was ready to crawl into a hole and die.  It was one of those days at work, where I think everyone has forgotten I’ve only been doing my particular job for not quite 3 months, and only had one day of training.  Anyway, since I was at work so early this morning, I was done by 4pm and I got immediately on the treadmill.  While I was on the treadmill, I discovered there is no 11:30, it is 11:32 or 11:19, so I stuck with the 11:32 for most of my 4 miles.  It was a little tough at times, but I never let myself take longer than a .25 mile break at 4.0.

The other downfall of the treadmill, after an hour, it automatically puts you through the stupid cool down, so I spent about three minutes attempting to override that.  Either way, I managed to finish my 6 miles (1 mile warm up, 4 miles at 11:32 and 1 mile cool down) in about 1 hour and 16 minutes.  Woo!

I realized when I got home, I had a blister on the arch of my right foot. Has this ever happened to you? How the hell do you stop that from happening?!

Eyes, Movies, Dance!

Yesterday morning I headed out for my first “long run” of my Phoenix half-marathon training.  We ended up walking almost all of our 7 miler, but I’m just glad we got out there and made the distance.  My IT band was super tight and sore, so when I got home I stretched it out.

I had an eye appointment at 1pm which I was really excited about because I hadn’t had my eyes checked in two years, and I’d broken my glasses so…yeah, hadn’t been wearing them. =X  I’m near sighted, but my right eye is stronger than my left, so I have a different RX in each eye.  It’s not terrible, just a small prescription, but it does make a difference.  My new eye doctor is really nice (and also very handsome,) and my prescription had changed.  In fact, my eye is better, so my prescription went down a bit! Yay!  I ordered my new glasses, and they fixed my old pair so I would have something to wear in the week or so that I’ll be waiting on my new glasses.

When I got home, my friend Allie sent me a text asking if I wanted to see NEVER LET ME GO with her that evening. I’d been wanting to see it, so I said of course, and we planned to meet to see a 9pm showing.

For dinner, we roasted a chicken and had some cous-cous, it was good, but I wish we’d had something else to add to the dish.

When I got to the theater, I tried to purchase my ticket, only to find out the show was sold out!  We went to the little bar next to the theater for a drink and decided to see THE SOCIAL NETWORK at 10:40pm instead.  Allie had already seen it, but it was really the only other movie we both were really excited about.  I do want to see IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, but I wasn’t really feelin it last night.  I was super disappointed we couldn’t see NEVER LET ME GO.

I was pleasantly surprised by THE SOCIAL NETWORK.  After hearing all the hype, I was somewhat skeptical, but it was good!  Also, Andrew Garfield is totally adorable, so that helped :)

This morning I was supposed to go on a hike with the girls, but getting home around 1:30am and not sleeping very well, I decided to skip and sleep in.  While I was sleeping in I had a voice mail from my Irish dance teacher, and after calling her back, I agreed to take a place in one of our teams again this year at the Oireachtas (regionals).  I can’t believe I’m doing this again, but the competition is up in Sacramento, so I can stay with my parents in San Francisco most likely, and only take one day off from work to drive up there.  I’m amped.  I think the Irish dance practices along with my half-marathon training will be a great combination.  It does however, mean that I have to skip out on the LA Prostrate 5k which is a bummer.

Tonight, we are going to our friend’s house for dinner.  While we were grocery shopping I picked up some food for lunch today.

The best part?  There are leftovers for lunch tomorrow! :) Win.

Tempo, Temp-no

I had my first ever Tempo run today.  It was, how you say? Awful?  Yes. That would be a good word for it.  My plan was 1 mile warm up, 3 miles at 11:09 and then 1 mile cool down, so 5 miles total.

Turns out I may have overestimated my ability to shave 30 minutes off my half marathon time. It was brutal, and I actually wasn’t able to follow the plan exactly.  I had to keep bringing the pace way down during the 3 miles.  Phew. I’m still going to keep trucking along with my plan, and do my best.

I started the morning off with some oatmeal

I used the last of my giant chocolate chips. Booo

Dinner number 1 was Pad Thai, Veggie Fried Rice and Edemame all from Trader Joe’s.

The Pad Thai was too spicy for me so Travis made me a toasted goat cheese, tomato and basil bread thingy.

It was good but I’m still really hungry :(   Bah.  Tempo run and dinner fail.

Come onnnnnnnn Friday.  Am I right?

Training, Day II

This week is hard, and it’s only Tuesday.  You guys, I’m having a rough time. Today was one of those days where everyone on the road was a jerk.  I saw two people run red lights on my drive home from work.  Then, finding a parking spot was a nightmare.  I’m exhausted, it’s only Tuesday, and there will be no rest at all this week or weekend.

Breakfast this morning was the last of the Kix.

Little Bits was totally into the empty box.

She pushed it all the way into the bathroom, I’m pretty sure she played with it while I was at work today.

After work, I did my “easy” 3 mile run.  I was still sore from Boot Camp last night. The outside of my left foot has been hurting as well, I think it’s tendinitis, and it was sore while I was running, but once I got about a mile and a half in I was warmed up more and my foot stopped hurting so much.  I’m icing it right now, which seems to be helping.  Last night I also put Icy Hot on my foot before bed, and that really helped I think.  I have insurance again as of October 1st, so I figure if it’s still bothering me then, I’ll get it looked at.   When I got home, I was tired, and a little stressed out, so instead of making shrimp, I just made some Trader Joe’s Orange Chicken and rice.

I saved the rest for lunch tomorrow.  Yay.  Tomorrow, I have my first speed work run planned. It’s supposed to be a Track work out, but I’m going to do it on the treadmill at work.  I am exhausted, so I guess it’s time for bed!
