High Fidelity is one of my favorite novels and movies. In fact, it is one of those rare instances where the shift from novel to film didn’t totally destroy the novel. Anyway, I’ve been making mix tapes and CDs for most of my life, even before I really know what they were called, so the scene where Rob explains how to make a mix tape, really resonates with me.
“The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up is hard to do. It takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick it off with a killer to grab attention. Then you gotta take it up a notch. But you don’t want to blow your wad. So then you gotta cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules.”
I am really good at making mix CDs. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but it is a skill I have honed over the years. In the past, I was the go to friend for music, going so far as my nickname was “DJ CK.” I made CDs for parties, for road trips, for birthdays, Christmases. So, last year, when I was dancing in a team at Regionals, I offered to make a CD of music for the teams. I pulled music suggestions from the other girls on the team and put together a mix for everyone.
I am doing the same thing this year, and really enjoying it. The thing is, this year I’m really trying to build momentum with this mix. I want the songs to start a bit slower, like a warm up, then build and build in intensity, and then taper out again for a cool down.
Once the track listing is finalized, I’ll share it with you all
Do you make mix CDs? What are your favorite songs?
