Spam-a-lot and Monterey Pop

I’ve been getting a ridiculous amount of spam lately, and sometimes the comments crack me up.

This one, for example.

After Saurday’s run, Travis and I got cleaned up, and ran some errands at The Grove and Trader Joe’s.  We needed picnic items for our friend Julia’s birthday celebration.  Cinespa was hosting Movies till Dawn Featuring Monterey Pop.

If you’ve never seen the footage from The Monterey Pop Festival held in, you guessed it, Monterey, in 1967 you are missing out. We got to enjoy concert footage from The Mamas and the Papas, Simon and Garfunkle, Jimi Hendrix, Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin and The Who, just to name a few. Cinespa hosts films during the summer at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which sounds creepy but is really awesome.  They had the sound system set up last night so that it felt like you were at the festival 20 rows back.  Amazing. It really was an incredible experience, and music will never be the same as it was in the lat 60s, early 70s.

We drank lots of wine, ate all kinds of food (including a Little Caeser’s pizza, gorganzola stuffed dates Travis made, chips, dip, gummy bears, and cupcakes) sang along (ok, maybe just I sang along) and enjoyed the evening.

Sunday, we did laundry, had lunch at a new taqueria called Escuela, which was great and then headed out to a cook out at a friend’s place.  Sadly, on our way to the cookout my stomach started feeling uber gross, and I had to be dropped off at home.  After a little nap and some evacuation of the tummy (gross) I felt better. I spent the rest of the evening snuggling in with the kittehs and reading my new book Tana French’s Faithful Place.

I’m not usually into crime fiction, but I discovered Tana French’s In The Woods at the airport a few months back and really enjoyed it. I then picked up her novel, The Likeness which was even better, and am working my way through Faithful Place.  I think what draws me into the stories is that they are all set in Ireland, mostly in and around Dublin.  What’s a great book you’ve been surprised by recently?

Spread Happiness

One of my favorite blogs is Caitlin’s Healthy Tipping Point. I enjoy her blog for a lot of reasons, but especially because of her ongoing message of joy and self love.  Next week, Cailtin’s first book, Operation Beautiful launches.  Operation Beautiful is an amazing way for each and every person to get involved in changing the lives of others.  Just by leaving a kind, positive note in a public place, you could be brightening the day, and life of another woman or girl.  I may be newer to Caitlin’s blog, but I couldn’t help but get excited when I saw not only a giveaway on Shape.com  but also a blog post all about Caitlin and her new book written by Jenna Autuori.  I just wanted to share with all of you so in case you hadn’t already discovered Caitlin, you could do so now!

I am a big fan of positive and supportive people, especially in the blog world.  Something I’ve learned from years of competitive dance is that  even when your goal is 1st place, it’s always more important to have fun and make friends. :) I’m not sure that blogging is so much about “1st place” but I do know that the internet in general is a whole lot more fun when you can share yourself and your friends with others.

On to lunch:

Leftover Chicken and Veggie Stir-Fry with brown rice.  I swear this was way more appetizing than it looks.  I think I ate too much though because I’m now feeling sleepy.

Questions:  What bloggers inspire you?

Sick Day

My day has been spent on the couch/in bed with the kittehs cuddled around me, reading and watching terrible daytime television.  Although, I will say, it was nice catching two episodes of Gilmore Girls. I do love that show.  :)

Now I’m waiting for Travis to get home from work with some Popsicles to help ease my sore throat.

Today I finished reading My Name is Memory by Anne Brashares. I picked it up in Barnes & Noble last weekend and dove in a few days ago. I loved it! It reminded me of another of my favorites, The Time Traveler’s Wife.  It has the same mix of sci-fi feel and love story that has become exceedingly popular in the past few years.  Anne Brashares is a great writer (I am not ashamed to say how much I loved The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series) and she really draws you into the world of Daniel and Lucy.  I’m actually sad that it’s over!

Question: What do you do when you’re home sick? Have you read anything great recently?

Serendipity

Growing up, one of the first series of books I remember falling in love with was the Serendipity collection of books written by Stephen Cosgrove and illustrated by Robin James. There’s something so beautifully whimsical about these books. They made me fall in love with books, and ultimately made me fall in love with stories and the idea of writing stories.

Now, I work with children in an after school care facility, and while I was helping some of the kids with homework today, I came across a copy of “Crickle -Crack” which I then HAD to sit and read while the kids worked quietly.

“Crickle-Crack” is a somewhat creepy story about a squriell named Squeekers who eats the buds from the Crickle Crack tree, which is forbidden.  The buds of the Crickle Crack tree are like a drug apparently because Squeekers gets majorly high and loses track of the whole day. He then rushes home, with some extra Crickle Crack buds in his pockets. He lies to his mother about where he’s been all day then eats more buds to stay awake to read his homework.  Basically he becomes addicted to these buds, and has a horrible reaction when he eats too many. Luckily with the love of his parents and support of his friends and neighbors he recovers and the elder critters in the wood burn the Crickle Crack tree to the ground.

I then tried to find any other copies of Stephen Cosgrove books in our tiny library section to no avail.

Part of me wants to buy a bunch of his books on amazon and just revel in the amazingness that is the Serendipity collection.
