13.1 Unexpectedly

Yesterday morning, I woke up at 5:15am and met my running buddy, Janna at Griffith Park at 6am.  On my way out the door, I’d eaten a piece of bread with peanut butter on it, and by the time I got to the park, I needed to find a bathroom.  So, before meeting Janna, I high tailed it to the nearest bathroom and prayed for two things.  One, that there would be toilet paper, and two, that there would be no murderers or animals in the bathroom. Thankfully for me, my prayers were answered. When I first met with Janna we agreed to just see how far we could go today. I had no real milage goal other than “maybe 6 miles?” We first went along our usual route, up a giant hill, down the giant hill, around the golf course and were heading out toward the road when we discovered a side street we hadn’t noticed before.  It lead us up onto a trail that took us back around to near the golf course and we just kept going.  By the time we got to the Pony Rides, we had hit a little over 6 miles. Janna then told me that her goal for the day was a half marathon, 13.1 miles. We had tried to keep our pace at conversational, which for me meant really slow, but my legs felt good.  My left knee was feeling ok, but my right was starting to twinge a bit, and I had done a lot of power walking. So, knowing it was at least another 4 miles back to our cars, I said I’d see how I felt once we hit 10 miles.  I wasn’t feeling super awesome, my hips were getting really tight which made my IT band really tight, which made my right knee sore, but I toughed it out, walking almost the whole thing.  We eventually finished our 13.1 miles, and then spent a good 15 minutes stretching.  I’m still not proud of the time it took us to complete the milage, 3:34, it’s a whole hour slower than I finished my last half marathon race, but I was proud of the fact that we covered the distance. I kept reminding myself that it has been 8 months since I last covered that kind of distance, and being mostly out of commission for several weeks hasn’t helped either.  Next weekend, I’m going to lobby for doing 5-6 miles and then we’ll try for 14 or 15 the following Saturday.

When you start to feel your muscles tighten up during a run, do you stop and stretch or power through?  We stopped to stretch twice, but I have a feeling I may actually also need a little extra arch support in my shoes.

This morning I’m a bit stiff and sore, but not nearly as bad as I thought I’d be.  I think the extra stretching, nap and icing I did when I got home helped.  Also, the ibuprofen.

Last night my parents took Travis and me out to an early birthday dinner. I chose Flemming’s Steakhouse  in El Segundo because I’d never been, love steak, and had heard good things about it.  It did not disappoint, although the dining room was really loud which was kind of annoying. The food was great, the service was wonderful and we all left with full tummies.

Now, I’m off to breakfast with my parents at their hotel, then to dance to help and finally we’re having a friendfamily dinner in the Marina tonight.  Travis and I are bringing a Greek Salad.  :) Hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend.

Yesterday, I decided I was going to register for the Disneyland Half Marathon this coming September.  You see, as I’ve mentioned before, not having anything to train for right away has been causing my motivation to wane, in a big way.  So, I figured at least registering for the one race I do have planned this year would be a step in the right direction.

Then, I saw the saddest words ever.  Disneyland Half Marathon 2011: SOLD OUT

SOLD OUT!! It’s only March! Last year, I don’t think we registered for this race until sometime in May or even June!  So, I added my name to the waitlist, but this is freaking me out.  It’s possible I won’t get to run the Disney half this year!

I knew I should have registered back when it first opened! Have you ever missed a race deadline, or had to waitlist yourself for a race?

Long Run Apathy

Since realizing I won’t be running in the San Diego Rock n’ Roll Marathon in June, I haven’t really been into doing my long runs.  Two weeks ago my stomach was bothering me so I skipped my 8 miler, and last week I was really sick with a terrible cold so I skipped the 9 miler, and then this morning, after a 3:30am text from one of my running buddies, saying she couldn’t make it, I too decided to skip the 10 miler.  The truth is, without a race as a deadline, I don’t have the motivation to do the distance. How do you stay motivated to run when you aren’t training for a race? I’ve been putting in the shorter distances on the treadmill after work, but just can’t seem to get my butt out for the long runs.

When I know I have a full day ahead of me as well, the desire to snuggle with the kittehs in bed for a few extra hours is way too tempting.  I did register for a 5k here in Los Angeles in May, butI think I need to find another half marathon before the Disney half in September.

In order to hopefully tempt myself into doing the upcoming longer runs, I stopped at Arch & Sole on La Brea after we did laundry to pick up a box of these:

Since I started training, I had been using the PowerBar Gel Blasts, but I wanted to try using the Shot Bloks. I’ve used them before, when I got a sample in one of my race bags, so instead of replenishing my Gel Blasts, I got some Bloks instead.  I’m going to bring a pack with me tomorrow so I have fuel for my cross training after work.  I’m hoping to get into the spin class, and will definitely need some energy! How do you fuel?

26.2 On Hold

Remember when I wrote about how I got talked into training for a full marathon?  Well, those plans have been put on hold for now.  You see, my running buddies have chosen the San Diego Rock n’ Roll Marathon for their race, and as it turns out, that’s also the weekend my friends are getting married.  So, while I am disappointed, which surprised me, because I was so hesitant about this whole marathon business to begin with, I am, of course, super excited to share that special day with our friends. I love weddings, and love my friends who are getting married, so it’s clearly a no brainer.

I always knew this could be a possibility since I wasn’t sure which weekend they had chosen for the wedding.  This was why I originally put out there that I would want to do either San Diego or Seattle, but San Diego is ideal since it’s in state for me.  Well, I also wouldn’t do an out of state full or half marathon by myself.  Especially since I couldn’t even guarantee that Travis could go, since his work is always so up in the air.

All that said, I am still following the full marathon training plan, even if it is only in order to push myself and prove to myself that I am capable of doing it.  Plus, I figure all this training can’t hurt my half marathon time, when I do my third half marathon.  Right now it looks like that half will be Disney in September, but this weekend I might start looking for a local half (or maybe even full?) sometime between June and September.  I know that I definitely want to do two shorter races, and I’ve got my eyes set on two in May, so maybe I’ll just keep adding in shorter distance races?  Who knows.  I do know that based on the disappointment I felt at knowing I couldn’t do the full marathon in June, that I do want to do one soonish.  ;)

Have you ever had to shelve your own race plans, for what reasons?

Pssst. Did you happen to catch Clare’s guest post here on  Saturday while I was galavanting all over downtown Phoenix?  If you missed it, you should check it out. Clare is the bee’s knees.

After finishing my second half marathon, and slamming out a new PR which was 22 minutes faster than my first half marathon, I’ve had a few people ask me what I did differently.

At first, I wasn’t really sure, in fact, I had been nervous about this race because I felt like I wasn’t as prepared.  We skipped (me and my training buddies, but mostly me,) a lot of our longer runs, sometimes due to weather, sometimes due to not feeling well.  While I was preparing for the Oireachtas (Irish dance,) I had to skip several of my long runs because my knees were in a lot of pain, and I wanted to play it safe. Just before this race though, I felt like I hadn’t done enough quality long runs, and went in thinking “Well, anything better than my first 2:59 will be good.”

What I hadn’t realized was that, while I didn’t have as many quality distance runs under my belt, all of my shorter weekday runs were done on a treadmill which kept my pace consistent.  Something I had definitely not done before. I’ve always strugged with maintaining pace during my outdoor runs.   Also, my 8  miler, and 10 miler were done on treadmills, with consistent paces kept for both runs.  I guess I really underestimated how the combination of controlled pace training and an almost entirely flat course would affect my run.  While I may not have trained as “long,” I definitely feel like I trained smarter.

While treadmill running isn’t nearly as exciting, or scenic as outdoor running, it’s certainly served me well during this training.  We’re taking this week/weekend off (I’ll probably squeeze in light cardio on Friday,) but I’ll be starting to put together an even better training plan for my next half.  I’m hoping to do either the San Diego Rock n’ Roll half (June 4th) or the Seattle Rock n’ Roll half (Juen 25th). I have friends getting married in June so it will end up being determined by that.  Then, I definitely want to do Disney’s  half again this September.  It appears I have caught the racing bug.  Have you?

Race Recap: P.F. Chang’s Rock n’ Roll 1/2 Marathon – Phoenix

We Did It!

Read my Disney Half Marathon Race Re-Cap here.

All of Team O’Dowd finished their respective marathon and half marathon, but let’s start from the beginning, shall we?

On Friday, my two running buddies and I each took a half day at work, so we were on the road to Phoenix around 12:45pm.  Our first stop was lunch at In-n-Out in Baldwin Park, which also happens to be the location of In-n-Out University.  Yes, such a thing exists. Who knew?

I went with my standard order (which I sadly, don’t eat very often because Travis hates In-n-Out,) the double double with fries.

Seriously, In-n-Out University.  Then, after some driving around in circles, because in Baldwin Park, you have to go west on the 10 to get to the eastbound 10 again (which doesn’t make any sense at all,) we were back on the road.

Around 7pm we made it to Quartzite and stopped for gas and bathroom break. Finally, about 9:30pm we made it to my cousin’s house, and after staying up for a bit to talk we were all ready for bed.  I got to sleep in my cousin’s son’s race car bed, which he promised would make me run faster.  The race car bed was insanely comfortable, seriously. I slept so well this weekend.

Sadly, I didn’t get any pictures from Saturday’s adventures, I forgot my camera at my cousin’s house :(   But, on Saturday, we ran some errands, went down to the Expo where we picked up our Bibs and I bought a new hat to wear.  We also sampled some stuff, like pasta, Gu products, Cliff Bars, The Stick (which I am currently regretting not purchasing,) and then had dinner at Sam’s Cafe in the Arizona Center (Tina and Mal also went there during their trip to Phoenix) I ordered the grilled tuna with wild rice and roasted vegetables. It was good, but the veggies were almost all peppers, which I tried to stay away from to avoid getting heart burn the night before the race.

We got home a little later than we had originally hoped, so all of us jumped right into bed and were asleep so we could be up at 4:30am.  We had decided to go over with my cousin (she ran the full marathon,) early to avoid having to worry about getting to the start area on time.  It was kind of cold, so I wore a hoodie, and gloves to check before we started the race.

After we waved Colleen (my cousin) off to her corral, we waited to meet my other cousin, Jen and her brother, Robert, before we had to get lined up for the half marathon.  We spent most of this time talking about how cold we were, and hoping about to stay warm.  We also spent this time using the really disgusting port-a-potties and getting nervous.  When it was finally time to line up we were actually all in line for potties, and had to haul to the corrals.  Thankfully we had plenty of time (I was in corral 21, and Jen and her brother stayed with me there.)  I will say, the starting process was a lot faster and more efficient than Disney.  Once we were moving I tried to stay with Jen and Robert, but lost them even  before the first mile marker.  I wanted to pace myself and was noticing that attempting to keep up with them was having me running 9 minute miles, which is WAY too fast for me.  So, I held back, and just focused on moving forward.  I was still cold, my toes were a little numb, but I knew soon enough I’d be warmed up.

Nothing too exciting happened during the course, and I have to admit, I was disappointed with the bands on the course.  None of them seemed that exciting, and some were even playing really slow tempo songs. The energy on the course really couldn’t match that on the Disney course, but that was ok, because this course was mostly flat, really.  The only other downside I would point out is that the 1/2 course wasn’t very scenic until we got to Tempe.  But, really, I was so focused on keeping a pace somewhere between 10:45 and 12:00 that I wasn’t looking around a whole lot.

I’m not going to lie, there were moments during this race when I was really having a tough time.  I stopped to stretch around mile 8, and at mile 9, I was starting to worry I might not beat my previous half marathon time of 2:59.  That really disappointed me, and I started trying to focus on simply doing better than 2:59.  Originally, I had hoped I could pull out a 2:30 half, knowing that a 29 minute difference was crazy. When I hit mile 10 at a little under 2 hours, I knew it might be possible if I really hauled ass to get close to that 2:30 goal.  I did still have some difficulty running, and had to take quite a few speed walking breaks to keep going.

Right before mile 13, I saw my Uncle Peter and that gave me that last push I really needed to get my ass in gear.  As I came up to the finish line I started sprinting and ended up crossing the finish line at 2:37:18, blowing my previous PR out of the water!  I shaved a whole 22 minutes off my last time!!

I was ECSTATIC!

After I finished, I found Janna (one of my running buddies, I finished a few seconds before her,) and our boss! Her family is in Phoenix, and she was going to be there this weekend anyway, so she stopped by, hoping to find us as we finished.  She’s got the pictures from right after since my camera was in my checked bag, but it was SO nice to see her.  I was on such a high, I could hardly feel anything, but my legs did hurt.  My hips, my knees and my legs were SO tight.  I tried to grab a banana, but they were all gooey, which kind of turned my stomach.  So I kept moving (because moving hurt less than stopping,) and grabbed a frozen yogurt.  After picking up our bags we headed to the beer garden to meet up with everyone else, took some pictures with our celebratory post=race beer and headed to my cousin Jen’s for a party.

Janna, myself, Courtney post-run!  Courtney finished in 1:57 and change. She is a rockstar

Janna, me, Courtney and my cousin Colleen (who finished her first marathon in 3:56!!!)

I spent almost the entire time at the post-race celebration eating a hamburger, drinking a beer, and sitting down.  It was so nice to catch up with a lot of my family.  My mom grew up in Phoenix and all but one of her 8 siblings still live there.  There was a great collection of family and it felt good to relax and celebrate with everyone.  After the party, we all went back to Colleen’s, got in the hot tub, showered and iced our knees.  It was another early to bed and then we were back on the road this morning around 9:30am.

Now for the official break down from the website:

My Garmin mile breakdowns are as follows:

Oh, and also, just because we could, we ate this on the way home. Because we earned it.

I’m still on a bit of a high. I’m so incredibly proud of myself.  I’m kind of convinced that the amount of consistent paced, treadmill runs I did really helped my speed for this race.  We’re already thinking about our races for the rest of the year.  June will be either San Diego or Seattle (I’ve got a wedding in June to plan around,) and definitely doing the Disney again in September.  We’re also planning on squeezing in some 5 and 10ks to keep us pumped up.  :)

This week, work-wise has been super crazy.  We had a big event, our annual support fundraising campaign kick off, and talent show, last night, which made the first part of the week stressful, and then today I’m only at work from 7:30-11:30 because I head out for Phoenix, and my second half marathon this weekend, a little after noon.  I’m so excited! Did you have a good week, or was it stressful or busy?

My friend Mikela recently started a blog, Not Nicole Michelle, and I really think you should check it out.  She’s a great writer, her posts are funny, smart, and interesting, and her music Wednesdays are excellent for finding new tunes.

Baked Four Cheese Macaroni – Eat, Live, Run – This recipe looks so delicious, I can’t wait to try it!

How I Raised  Money for TNT - Carrots n’ Cake – Tina writes a great blog post about tips and hints to raising money for charity when you are racing.  Asking people for money isn’t always easy (trust me, I work in fundraising ;)   but if you know how to ask, it can be so much easier!

Intro to Wedding Blogs -Meals and Miles – No, I’m not engaged, but last year 10 people I know did get engaged, and Meghann’s list of wedding blogs is great, and just fun to look at, even if you aren’t getting married this year.

That’s all for this week. Sorry I kind of slacked, I am still pretty behind in my google reader.  I should have at least one guest post for you this weekend. While I’d love to be able to blog the entire weekend, I’m just not sure how realistic that is, and I don’t want to leave you all in the lurch!  I’ll definitely have my race re-cap up sometime after Sunday, but between driving to Phoenix, hanging out with friends and cousins, running, celebrating, and driving back, I’m not sure how much internet access or time I’ll have.  Hope you all have a spectacular weekend!

Fish, Take Two

Tonight’s dinner was a simple baked salmon with Trader Joe’s blended grain mix and some spinach.  We didn’t make enough spinach, clearly.  Have you ever underestimated the amount of spinach you needed to cook?

This dinner was really easy, Travis marinated the salmon in some Parmesan, garlic and basil flavored olive oil, then pan seared the fish before baking it in the oven.   Sadly, our beloved, inherited rice cooker seems to have died, as only the “warm” feature works now.  I am bummed. I really liked that rice cooker.

This fish was much tastier than last night’s.  I ended up bringing the leftovers from last night’s dinner to work for lunch today, and it wasn’t bad cold, and had a little more flavor, however the tuna was pretty dry.

After work, I hopped on the treadmill and did 3.45 miles in 45 minutes and it felt really good to be moving.  Then, when I got home, I discovered a package had arrived.

the Team O’Dowd t-shirts for the Phoenix Marathon and Half Marathon arrived!!  Above is the front of our t-shirts, with our team slogan “Pain now…Beer later.”

and this is the back!  The people running the half marathon get these 13.1 shirts, and my cousin who is running the full (and her family) are getting 26.2 shirts.  I am so excited now!

I used customink.com to make the shirts, and I couldn’t be happier with the process, or the results.  They were very user friendly from start to finish, and while the shirts ended up being a little more expensive than I had hoped (partially because we had a smaller order than I was hoping for,) they came out great!  A huge thank you to the folks at CustomInk.com for all your hard work. :)

Pssssst: Jasmine, over at Eat, Move, Write is doing A WEEK OF GIVEAWAYS!

“The Eat Move Write Week of Giveaways”  Go on, enter!! Do it now! Today’s giveaway is CHOBANI which I have heard is amazingly delicious yogurt.

It’s already 5 days into the New Year, and I am ready for Friday like it is nobody’s business.  The week has been going by simultaneously slowly and quickly, and it’s starting to mess with my head.

I do have a slightly different motive for wanting it to be Friday already.  I’m only 11 days away from my second half marathon and I am itching to go!  My running buddies and I, as well as several of my cousins are running in the Phoenix Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon. My cousin, Colleen, is actually running the full marathon (just like Tina and Mal!)  Last night I got the confirmation email so I am rearing to go.  The only downside is, all this anticipation is making it hard to stay focused at work. Oops!

What are you looking forward to in the next few weeks?

Looking Forward

I’m not really one for “New Year’s resolutions,” per sea.  The thing is, most of the time, I hadn’t been very good at setting actual, reachable, reasonable goals for myself, so I stopped setting “resolutions,” years ago.  Do you set resolutions for yourself each year?

This year, however, I finally sat down and wrote out goals I think I can attain, or at least, work toward attaining in the coming year. I really thought about what I’d like to accomplish this coming year, where I’d like to be in my life by the end of 2011.  Of course, I realize I don’t have control over everything that will happen in the coming year, but feeling more prepared to take on my own life, makes me feel better. :)

So, I give you, my 2011 Goals.  I’m hoping that by sharing them here, it will help to keep me more accountable.

2011 Goals

-       Complete the Phoenix Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon  (January 2011)

-       Sign up for the Disneyland half marathon, and train for an improved time goal.

-       Within the first six months of the year, complete one online course through a junior college in order to gain junior standing at MSMC

-       Create workable schedule with J, and D (and anyone else who’d like to join) to study for TCRG, and work with Bella (and possibly A) to learn remaining choreography in time to sit the exam Jan. 2012

-       Completely pay off credit card by June 2011.

-       Start a savings account, and regularly contribute the $300 I had been spending on credit card payments per month. (Set up auto transfer)

-       Regularly contribute to retirement fund

-       Once approx. 6 months bare minimum living expenses have been saved, begin savings plan for fun things like vacations etc.

-       Try yoga at least 3 times.

-       Stretch after every run, for at least 15 minutes.

-       A.  Sit in pigeon pose for 4 minutes each side, per day.

-       Begin using the public library for reading materials

-       Spend ten minutes each evening meditating and emotionally letting go of each day.

I think, what my main focus for this coming year will be, is to really take better care of myself.  Making myself more fiscally responsible (paying off debt, having better savings,) will eliminate a lot of monthly stresses.  By making more time for my interests (dance, school, running,) I will feel better.  So, 2011, bring it on! I’m ready for you!

What are your goals for 2011?
