Marathon Prepping – One Month To Go

As of Friday, I am officially one month away from the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco.  I am terrified. No, really. I know a lot of people say that, but I am truly terrified.  I’ve thought more than once I made a mistake in signing up for this. 26.2 miles is a lot, what was I thinking?! But, I’m doing my best to prep for the up coming race in addition to my training (which I feel like I’ve been a majorly slacking on, which only adds to my anxiety.)

First, I ordered a CamelBak.  Megan over at Mega Nerd Runs reccommended the Annadel model which holds 50oz of fluid and comes in this fun teal color! She’s even got a little Amazon store set up where you can find the pack for a bit less than retail.

And for good measure here are some “outtakes” while I attempted to take a photo of myself wearing the pack.

There’s Bits in the background, looking out the bathroom window while her momma acts a fool.

I haven’t run with the CamelBak yet, but plan on trying it on my 20 miler next weekend.  To say that I am concerned about my physical ability to complete 20 miles is a huge understatement. My only goal for this marathon has gone from finishing strong in under 5 hours, to finishing in 6 hours to simply finishing. I don’t care if I have to crawl across the finish line I want that Tiffany necklace. Good motivation, right?

Just as an FYI this is the description from the race website of the course:

“The Nike Women’s Marathon and half marathon courses will remain the same as the courses have been since 2005. The race will kick off in Downtown San Francisco at Union Square and head through the financial district past the famous TransAmerica building. It will then proceed along the San Francisco Bay past Fisherman’s Wharf, Aquatic Park, Ghirardelli Square, Fort Mason and Marina Green while revealing breathtaking views of Alcatraz and The Golden Gate Bridge. The course then weaves through the Presidio and Sea Cliff districts, out to the Great Highway, through Golden Gate Park and south around Lake Merced, finishing just north of the Great Highway along the Pacific Ocean.”

It will be a beautiful course, I’m sure, which I’m really hoping will help keep me on my feet and moving forward.

The other day, on LivingSocial there was a deal for Arch & Sole, a local running store. $25 for $50 of merchandise. I quickly snatched that up, and spent Sunday afternoon in the store asking the owner questions and eventually purchasing some items.  Now that my left knee isn’t so painful (nearly no pain when running with the brace,) my right knee is acting up, mostly around my IT band, and I had some questions about the possibility of needing extra support in my shoes.  I went in, asked my questions, the owner analyzed my gait and let me know, after looking at my shoes for wear, I may be getting TOO MUCH support in my right foot, where my arch isn’t as weak, but that he thinks it’s most likely an issue of my right side compensating for weakness on my left with my runner’s knee. He said to keep doing what I’m doing, foam roll more, and stretch really well and if that still doesn’t help (he also said wearing a knee sleeve may be adding to the issue, especially if it’s too small) to come back and he’d have me try some other shoes.  He didn’t want me to buy another pair of shoes just yet though, saying wear-wise it looked okay.

So, instead, I picked up two pairs of socks, some Gu gels, and a lightweight long sleeved shirt (which will probably be needed during my race!)

After my coupon I just paid $2.16!  So all in all, the shirt, socks and Gu cost me under $30, which is a great deal as far as I’m concerned.

I also picked up this gem that was in their stash of local info and what not:

Rolling Out by Ashley Borden - some tips and exercises for the foam roller.

I’m trying to stay positive, and get excited about this race, but I have to be honesty, even short runs have become difficult to motivate myself.  I know most of this is stress related.  I’m a worst case scenario kinda gal, so not feeling 100% confident in this is only exacerbating my current stress. Lately, all I can think about are the things I SHOULD HAVE been doing from the get go.  Strength training, stretching, foam rolling, icing, more rest.  Obviously, I can’t go back, but I do still have 4 weeks left, so I’m going to make the most of them.

One thing that helps is reading Ali over at Ali on the Run‘s blogs about her marathon prep. She is so amped that I can’t help but feel even a tiny bit of that energy after reading her posts!

Time to focus on more stress relief in the form of warm baths, stretching and DIY mani-pedis. ;)

What’s your best stress relief tip?

Spam-a-lot and Monterey Pop

I’ve been getting a ridiculous amount of spam lately, and sometimes the comments crack me up.

This one, for example.

After Saurday’s run, Travis and I got cleaned up, and ran some errands at The Grove and Trader Joe’s.  We needed picnic items for our friend Julia’s birthday celebration.  Cinespa was hosting Movies till Dawn Featuring Monterey Pop.

If you’ve never seen the footage from The Monterey Pop Festival held in, you guessed it, Monterey, in 1967 you are missing out. We got to enjoy concert footage from The Mamas and the Papas, Simon and Garfunkle, Jimi Hendrix, Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin and The Who, just to name a few. Cinespa hosts films during the summer at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which sounds creepy but is really awesome.  They had the sound system set up last night so that it felt like you were at the festival 20 rows back.  Amazing. It really was an incredible experience, and music will never be the same as it was in the lat 60s, early 70s.

We drank lots of wine, ate all kinds of food (including a Little Caeser’s pizza, gorganzola stuffed dates Travis made, chips, dip, gummy bears, and cupcakes) sang along (ok, maybe just I sang along) and enjoyed the evening.

Sunday, we did laundry, had lunch at a new taqueria called Escuela, which was great and then headed out to a cook out at a friend’s place.  Sadly, on our way to the cookout my stomach started feeling uber gross, and I had to be dropped off at home.  After a little nap and some evacuation of the tummy (gross) I felt better. I spent the rest of the evening snuggling in with the kittehs and reading my new book Tana French’s Faithful Place.

I’m not usually into crime fiction, but I discovered Tana French’s In The Woods at the airport a few months back and really enjoyed it. I then picked up her novel, The Likeness which was even better, and am working my way through Faithful Place.  I think what draws me into the stories is that they are all set in Ireland, mostly in and around Dublin.  What’s a great book you’ve been surprised by recently?

Sushi 101

Last year, for his birthday, I bought Travis and me gift certificates to a Beginning Sushi making class. With all the traveling he did for work in the last year we weren’t able to schedule our class until this Saturday.  So, with our aprons in hand, we went to our Basic One Day Sushi class at the California Sushi Academy, which is located in the restaurant, Bar Hayama.  This restaurant is about two blocks from my office, which was really amusing to me.

When we arrived, we had to fill out a wavier, and then were set up at our stations along both sides of the sushi bar.

We learned how to make cucumber roll, avocado roll, California roll, Rainbow roll and then a spicy tuna hand roll.

Here’s Travis’ cucumber roll.  Mine was decidedly less pretty.

I couldn’t even manage to cut the correct amount of rolls.  Oops?

Our Sensi was great though, and came around to everyone and assisted when necessary, without taking over anyone’s sushi, and kept us entertained the entire class.

As I expected, Travis did really well with all the sushi skills.  I, however, you know, didn’t, but I had a lot of fun and all of our sushi was delicious regardless of what it looked like.

Attempting to cut my sushi rolls.

This is the secret American technique, of plastic wrap…. ;)

Me and my spicy tuna hand roll. The only pretty thing I managed to make! Yay!

This was a great class, and someone may or may not be getting the second class as a birthday gift this year…. Shhh don’t tell Travis. ;)

After sushi we came home and napped/read then did laundry.  For dinner we ate our leftover sushi from the class and are now watching DESPICABLE ME (which was one of my favorite movies last year) on OnDemand.  Tomorrow we have a Taste of Texas all-you-can-eat festival downtown that we’ll be attending.  This should be amazing.

Have you ever taken a cooking class before?

Lomax!

Yesterday was a Downtown Los Angeles adventure.  We started at The Downtown Independent Theater which was holding one if its monthly Drink-Along & Beer Pong event. Yesterday’s films were Weekend at Bernie’s and Weekend at Bernie’s Two.  I had never seen either of the films.  Tickets were only $10 and included a free beer and coozy.

Here’s what the ticket site had to say about the event

Get out of the heat and come relax in our air conditioned paradise! We’ll be having a grand ol’ time up on the rooftop where we’ll be playing beer pong, or down in the theater where we’ll be watching (or drinking) to our favorite pair of dead people comedies: Weekend at Bernie’s I and II!

Doors at 3pm
Weekend at Bernie’s at 4pm
Weekend at Bernie’s II at 6pm
Drinks & Rooftop Beer Pong all day

We all arrived around 3pm and had our free beers, then went to the roof where we played a round of beer pong.

My team won, because we are awesome.

After beer pong, we got snacks and headed into the theater, where we were given a list of rules for a drinking game.  It was hilarious. Anytime someone in the movie said “Lomax,” we shouted “LOMAX!” and took a drink, most of us from soda or water. There were several other times to drink. This lead to general hilarity during the movie.  After the first movie we went back to the roof for a bit, and then went back to watch part of the second movie.

We left around 20 minutes in because the second movie is kind of terrible, and we were all hungry.  We walked from the theater to Mac and Cheeza, a restaurant that serves only Mac and cheese. I’m kinda sad this place is only downtown because it was amazing.

I ordered a Baby Mac with regular noodles, cheese base, with spinach, tomato and ham, and a cheesy topping.

And a cream soda, which was also delicious.  It’s been a while since I’d had cream soda, I forget how tasty it is!

There is macaroni art on the walls at Mac and Cheeza.

My only complaint is that the mac and cheese could have been a bit more flavorful, but it was really tasty, and a great concept.

Walked back to our cars, headed home and then today I had lunch with some friends at a place called Nichols in the Marina.  I didn’t take any pictures, but I had a delicious Avocado Melt which had avocado, tomato and Monterey jack cheese on sourdough bread.  It was really, really good. It hit the spot for sure.   After lunch I went to a friend’s house to meet her new kitten, Oscar.

Watch out, he’s really adorable.

On my way home from The Marina I stopped at the grocery store for some fresh fruit for the week, and some popsicles, which have been totally sold out in every grocery store I’ve stopped at in the past few weeks.  It’s been a lot cooler the last few days, but still really warm here in Los Angeles, so some icy popsicles are just what I need to keep cool. :)   Now, I’m sitting on the couch, icing my knee, which is sore from all the walking we did yesterday, and watching Harry Potter, which is being showing on what appears to be an infinite loop on ABC Family this weekend.  I am not complaining at all.  I love me some Harry Potter.  What did you do this weekend?

Sacrifice, My Social Life and Personal Finance: Part 1

Credit cards

Image via Wikipedia

In my life, I haven’t always taken the same path as most of my peers.  I didn’t go to a four year university after high school. I made this decision for a lot of reasons, and at the time, it was the right decision to make.  It allowed me to grow up a bit more, follow my heart and continue to dance, and grow as a dancer.  It also allowed me to experience the amazing city of San Francisco.

When I moved back to Los Angeles, I continued my different path to Cosmetology school, then to Make-up school. I’ve held many different jobs, and have learned many different skills.  While attempting to make a living as a make-up artist, I realized a lot of things about myself.  First and foremost, that while I really enjoyed doing make-up, what I loved most about it was making people feel great, and not long hours on a set, and also, not making any money.  However, I did not want to return to a retail career path.  I have been extremely lucky that my parents have been very supportive of me in many ways over the years.  Some people have criticized me for how much my parents helped me financially when I moved back to Los Angeles.  However, I have never been ashamed of their help, and I have never lied about nor denied the amount of help they have given me.  I am eternally grateful to them for allowing me to continue to find and blaze my own path in this world.

But, the real point of this post, is how I got myself out of credit card debt. You see, I woke up one morning, when I was working full-time managing the front desk of a gym while attempting to also work as a make-up artist, picking up student film work and test shoot work with photographers, when I realized, I felt far too old to continue to have my parents help me in the manner they were. At my full time job, I usually made just enough money to cover rent or food and utilities.  So, my parents helped me out with the differences.  During this time, I was not going out very often, and I very rarely saw my friends on social occasions, because I couldn’t afford to go drinking, or out to dinner or to movies with them. It was a difficult time emotionally because I felt really lonely often.  So, I took a full time, salaried job with benefits so that I would no longer be dependent on my parents financial help.

That was four years ago.  During that time as well, I began to slowly chip away at the credit card debt I had accumulated over the years.  I don’t remember what the total was when I started, but it had to have been over $10,000 between several credit cards.  I began by paying as much as I could and slowly chipping away at the totals.  Then, I began utilizing 0% balance transfers to consolidate my debt.  However, it wasn’t until last year, when I accepted the first job I ever truly took just for the money, that I made a firm mandate to myself.  I had gotten myself down to about $8,000 in credit card debt, and I vowed that I would do my best to pay that debt off in two years, a year if possible. It helped that Travis had already paid off his own credit card, and student loan debt.  Travis was a huge motivator for me, in terms of really seeing what actually having a plan and then a savings could mean for the future.  Aside from simply having an emergency fund (which even now I don’t really have,) seeing Travis save for, and purchase his 1968 Camaro in cash, was inspiring.

Stay tuned for Part 2: How I did it, and what I gave up!

Tough (run) Love

This morning I had a 12 miler on the schedule.  My second half-marathon is coming up in just two weeks, so today marked our final long run before the race. I was actually kind of excited about this run, because I wanted to really push myself and see what time I could finish 12 miles in to give me an idea of when I might be able to finish my half.  Sadly, this run not only turned into just 10.71 miles, it was a total train wreck of a run.

I tried to hydrate as much as possible yesterday, since I knew spending the day hungover wasn’t helping anything.  Sadly, I didn’t get enough hydration yesterday, and I could feel it this morning.  Waking up at 6am was rough, I didn’t sleep well, and it was cold and dark out.  However, I kept telling myself how much better I would feel once I was done.  I ate my peanut butter sandwich, packed up my stuff, and headed out to Griffith Park.

I met with one of my running buddies at 7am, and it was cold. I wore a long sleeved tech-tee, and a light weight windbreaker type jacket, long pants and had a hat and gloves and still felt super cold for the first two and a half miles.  We stretched a bit before we headed out, but I could already tell it was going to be a tough run.  Aside from the cold, my brain was working against me, constantly reminding me how cold I was.  I was also wearing my hydration belt today with my PowerBar Endurance drink mix, which I couldn’t seem to find a comfortable position for.  This whole training process for this half, I haven’t worn the water bottle with the belt, and it was really awkward and made for an uncomfortable first few miles.  I finally took the bottle out and carried it.

Los Angeles has had a ton of rain in the past few weeks, and most of the dirt trails we run were full of sticky mud, and holes in the path, so we cut across at one point and hit the paved road for the rest of the run.

At about the 3.5 mile mark is when things started to go downhill faster.  Suddenly I felt weird.  Not totally lightheaded, but close, and off balance slightly.  It was really kind of scary, so I spent a good portion of time walking starting then.  I wanted to keep pushing, but decided passing out in the middle of Griffith Park was worse than walking.   The other bummer is that while I use a Garmin device, my buddy uses an iPod with the Nike chip, and by the time my Forerunner said I’d hit 5 miles, her iPod said we’d gone over 6 miles.  Normally, I would have just pushed myself an extra mile to make the numbers on my Garmin total correctly, but I was starting to get really stiff and sore in my hips and knees and I still felt kind of wonky, so I just said forget it and turned around.

When I finally hit that mile 6 was when my stomach started acting funky, and I felt really gross and started burping.  Again, lots of walking.  I was so frustrated with myself, and thought about pulling an extra loop to get in that lost two miles, but my hips were so tight it was really painful, and then my hamstrings started to cramp.  I’d never experienced actual muscle cramping while I’d been running before and it was not pleasant.  I figured it was because I wasn’t hydrated enough.

I finally made it back to my buddy at the top of the trail and was so disappointed, but I had to remind myself, this was only one run.  Yes, it was my last long run, but, aside from a really difficult first 10 mile run back when I was training for the Disneyland Half, I’ve been lucky with my long runs.   So, I just keep telling myself that this was just ONE bad run, and it doesn’t mean I won’t be ready in two weeks.

Here’s how the run broke down on the Garmin

Total Distance: 10.71 miles
Total Time:  2:40:21
Avg. Pace: 14:58

Seeing that total time and average pace was rough, considering the 10 miles I did on Christmas Eve was so much stronger.  However, that was on a treadmill, with controlled temperatures, so maybe I shouldn’t have gotten so excited about those numbers before.

Mile 1: 18:21
Mile 2: 13:34
Mile 3: 13:25
Mile 4: 13:47
Mile 5: 12:37
Mile 6: 16:27
Mile 7: 14:13
Mile 8: 15:47
Mile 9: 15:01
Mile 10: 14:38
.71 nubbin : 17:00

I’m glad I went out this morning and got in a double digit distance, even if it wasn’t the strong 12 miles I was hoping for.  What do you do to get over having a bad run or workout session? For a lot of this run, I was feeling so gross I didn’t even listen to my iPod, which was kind of interesting.  Luckily in the park there’s a lot to look at which keeps the runs interesting, but I also have to say, it was kind of weird running outdoors again after the last two long runs on a treadmill.  I have to say, I missed the climate control of the gyms.

Home, Sweet, Home

Sorry I went missing this weekend! I didn’t really have access to the internet while I was in Nashville.  It was a great trip, we even had a white Christmas! Sadly, I didn’t really take a whole lot of pictures.  We were all pretty busy eating, and socializing with Travis’ family, and since I’ve only met them one other time, I figured I could be ok with kicking back and relaxing a bit.

This was the view from my seat on the plane on the way to Nashville, Wednesday afternoon. I was feeling pretty unwell all week, and had stayed home sick Tuesday and Wednesday, so I was worried about a long plane ride.  Luckily the cold & sinus meds I took seemed to help.  Although, they couldn’t help all the delays.  My flight was delayed leaving Los Angeles, and then we sat on the runway for about an hour, our layover in Vegas was delayed about another hour.  I didn’t end up landing in Nashville until after 1:30am.

While we were there, we spent time with these adorable critters

While driving around, we also saw briefly, a Civil War battle site, (and a hay bale, a real live, hay roll!)

I’d never seen a battle field before, and it was pretty interesting,  knowing the amount of history that took place there, it was incredible.  I was sad we didn’t have more time to see the other fields.

On Christmas Eve, I went to a YMCA in Nashville, and got my butt on a treadmill.  I did my ten mile run, and

I was SO proud of myself!  I kept an average pace of 12:43 for ten miles! I’m pretty sure that’s the best average pace I’ve ever had on a long run before.  I was really impressed by the cardio equipment at this YMCA, the treadmills were super fancy, even fancier than the ones at work!  It took me a while to figure out where to plug my earphones, and whatnot, but once I did everything was great.

Finding my groove was easier than I thought it would be on this run.  I just picked a manageable pace, usually somewhere between 12:30 and 11:45 and just tried to stick to somewhere between there the whole time.  I only took a few walking breaks, and it wasn’t until about mile 8 that I really started feeling sore or uncomfortable.  I ran out of water close to mile 8, and was afraid to get off the treadmill (especially since I’d already been on for almost two hours, and I knew if I stopped I might not be able to start again,) and I had no idea where the closest water fountain was, so I just toughed it out the best I could. I think really keeping my pace comfortable the entire time helped, and this was maybe one of the easiest long runs?

Everyone at the Hendersonville YMCA in Nashville was super helpful and friendly, and I have to say, that while I love Los Angeles, the hospitality and the courtesy of the South will be missed.

It started to snow on Christmas Eve night, and I got really excited, because I haven’t seen snow in like, eight years, and even that was not a lot of snow.

I was sad to leave, I wished I’d had more time to see more in Nashville, but sadly, I had to be back to work this morning.  We got lucky, getting through security at the airport last night was quick, and our flight ended up landing only a few minutes behind schedule.   Clint Black was on our flight, which was kind of cool.

When we got home, we decided to stop and get food. So after some back and forth, we ate at P.F. Chang’s before coming home.  Tonight after I got home from work, we hit up the grocery store and made shrimp, broccoli and mushrooms with pasta in a homemade cream sauce. Yum.

We FINALLY watched the season finale of Dexter tonight, phew, talk about stressful!  Now we’re both just hanging out on the couch being lazy.

Phew, I’m pretty wiped out.  Apologies again for the lack of more pictures, and the total lack of actual content this weekend.  I promise I’ll work on it this week ;)

Satisfaction

I have a confession. My favorite part of my job is getting to stamp the receipts with our red “paid” stamp.  There’s something deeply satisfying to see that red ink stamped right on the page.

This weekend was a bit rough. Friday night we went out to The Shack for karaoke, something we hadn’t done in at least a month.  When I first moved back to Los Angeles, I used to go to The Shack twice a week for karaoke, Wednesday and Friday nights you could find me there, almost without fail.  Over the last five years, I’ve cut back further and further until it has become unusual that we do go to karaoke, and that makes me sad.  However, when I was in school on weekends, and then training for my first half marathon, staying out super late Friday nights went out the window.  I’d like to make it a more regular occurrence because it’s fun and nice to see friends.  We were out a lot later than I’m used to now, and after a few beers (another thing I’m not as used to anymore,) waking up at 8am on Saturday morning was rough.

Saturday morning I had brunch with a woman my dad used to work with.  She sits on several non-profit boards and is involved with an organization she thought I might be interested in working with.  It’s called MOSTE and I am definitely interested.  It is an organization that places professionals women with middle school and high school aged girls as mentors.  After brunch, I decided to take a nap, which turned into a much longer nap than I anticipated. I ended up sleeping for about 3 hours!  Around 5 we headed out in Travis’ Camaro (which is mostly done, sort of,) to our friends’ place in Burbank.  The original plan was to watch the Memphis football game, but it turned into a little get together, which was fun.  I had one glass of Sangria, but my biggest mistake was having several glasses of Cherry Coke. :(   We were out later than I’d wanted again, and after an evening of mostly snack foods (cheese, chips, soda, cookies,) my stomach was a mess Sunday morning.

My alarm went off at 6am yesterday morning, because I had an 8 miler planned, but after getting up and starting to get dressed, my stomach emptied itself, and I realized I was running a slight fever.  I drank some water, and went right back into bed, where I stayed until 11:30. :(   It felt like the whole day was wasted.

Around 12:30 I decided to head out on a run on my own. I was annoyed that I’d passed on the 8miler this morning, and was determined to get some mileage under my belt.  I ate half a peanut butter sandwich (on white bread because it’s all we had,) and drank some water, and headed out.  I ended up only making it about 2.25 miles, and while I was running, I realized, not only had I not properly fueled this run, but I hadn’t been fueling myself properly for the last few weeks.  I haven’t been drinking enough water, or eating enough fruits and veggies.  I really need to make taking care of myself more  of a priority, especially as the holidays are around the corner. I’ve got a list started of goals for the new year, which I’ll share soon. How do you make yourself a priority?

Sunday evening, I headed out to my hometown for an early family dinner for my best friend.  Her parents were making burgers, and it was really nice to see them, as they are like my second family.  It started pouring down rain on our drive home, and rained most of the night.  Southern California really needs this rain, so I’m grateful for it, even if it does  make driving here a little more difficult.

Ban on Smoking

Image via Wikipedia

Can you believe it’s already November?  November signals the real beginning of the holiday season, too bad we’ve got summer weather all this week in Los Angeles.

Speaking of Los Angeles, according to LAist.com LA is considering a ban on smoking in public places. I would vote for that!

As I mentioned before, we’ve got freakishly hot weather right now, but Caitlin‘s Baked Pear Oatmeal looks so good, I can’t wait for the temps to drop again so I can make some!

Los Angeles, We Have Weather

You guys, it’s raining today. Yes, raining! Last week it was 113 in Downtown Los Angeles, and today, it’s raining. If I wasn’t home sick, I’d be thrilled.  Well, I’m still a little thrilled.

This is Ralphie. He lives across the street, and this morning, he came to visit. Little Bits couldn’t have cared less. I think it made Ralphie a little sad.

I tried eating some of my pumpkin over night oats, but all I really want is chicken noodle soup (which we don’t have.)
