Closet Organization

I wanted this post to be done and up earlier this week (like, by Wednesday,), but with work as hectic as it was, I had to impose upon myself some plugged in boundaries.  This included, stepping away from my computer (and email inbox, and google reader feed, Twitter, Tumblr, and Frontier on Frontier Ville =X,) because the number of emails, posts and debris on my Frontier were, frankly, overwhelming.  So, I apologize for how long this has taken!

Last weekend, what started as a simple, clean out/organize my jewelery project turned into a full blown Closet/Makeup organization. I know that I have some hoarder tendencies, like hanging on to t-shirts that I really don’t wear because they have sentimental value. The same problem extended to my jewelery, which was more of a lazy issue than anything else.  The thing is, I hardly ever wear jewelery anymore, but I had a full jewelery box and originally had all my dangly earrings hanging on a basket that also housed my nail polish.

After re-arranging, and Goodwill bagging several of those sentimental t-shirts, old purses, shoes and whatnot, my closet now looks like this:

I didn’t think to take Before pictures, because originally this wasn’t an actual overhaul, but, it certainly became one.

On this shelf (photo above) I now have all my workout pants, shorts, and then my sweatpants/pj pants.  Before, this shelf held a wicker basket that kept my purses.  That basket has been moved one shelf up.

This shelf used to house an old plastic container full of crap, and my Louboutins, which I keep in their box. That container was re-purposed, and then moved up one shelf.

On the little table in my closet is now my jewelery box, my perfumes a couple of lotions and a ton of bobby and hair pins. Oh, and my sparkly business card case, which I have yet to discover an actual use for because right now I use a canvas bag as a purse which doesn’t feel fancy enough for this beautiful item.

The second shelf of the table houses a basket with hair ties, headbands and some other miscellaneous items. On the left is a pretty little plate with my larger bracelets, and in the boxes under neath are the necklaces and earrings that wouldn’t fit into the jewelery box above.

The bottom shelf holds my “gym bag,” yes, I use a Trader Joe’s reusable grocery bag as my gym bag, and some extra lotions and body sprays that have been gifted to me.  So far, everything has worked in its new home, and I’m enjoying keeping my desk looking like this:

While our neighbors were moving out last week, they left a little something by the dumpster that we snatched up, like the hobos we are.

A new bedside lamp! Yay!  This lamp was a perfect addition to the bedroom because it has a switch right next to the bed now, where our wall sconces have to be turned on and off by the switch on the wall next to the door.  What’s the best item you’ve found that was meant to be trashed?

Weekend Organization

I used to manage the front desk of a small gym near our old apartment, and Saturday I did some data entry for the owner, which is going to be an ongoing thing. It’ll be nice to have the extra income for sure, but it did mean I lost the better part of my Saturday.  Travis was working from home, and running all over LA scouting locations all day, so by the time he was finished, it was almost 7pm and neither of us really felt like cooking, or grocery shopping.  So, since we knew our original Valentine’s Day plans (gun range and Outback, seriously,) were foiled since he was also working Sunday, we decided to run out to sushi for dinner.

It was totally worth the money, and definitely nice to treat ourselves.  The last time we went out to dinner was a few weeks ago, and before that, I can’t even remember when we’d gone out to dinner.  We go to Miyako sushi out in North Hollywood for their all you can eat special.  It’s such a great deal because it includes all their specialty rolls (like the one above, my personal all time favorite, Crispy Rice.)

Sunday, after skipping my long run, again, we headed out to do laundry.  While our laundry was in the wash we decided to skip the donut shop and try All About the Bread which is just across the street from the laundromat.  I’d seen Lynn over at The Actor’s Diet talk about it before.  However, as someone who is not overall a big fan of sandwiches, I’m not the best person to review the place.  It was underwhelming to say the least.  Travis and I shared the special which was fresh burrata with sun dried tomatoes, pesto and a tomato.  The bread was just kind of meh, and the sun dried tomatoes were mostly roasted red peppers.  By the way, I do not like peppers.  So, clearly, I was not a fan.

The best part was that they have one of those new fangeled  coke machines, which has like a million choices.  I got Cherry Coke.  After we finished our laundry, I stopped at Arch & Sole, then we came home and put all that laundry away, and did some cleaning/organizing.  I started with what I thought would be a small project, of organizing my makeup.  Turns out, as a make-up artist, this was no easy feat.

I started by pulling out all the makeup I’ve got shoved into various places in the bathroom, and dragging out my make-up case which I used in make-up school and now holds pretty much only my FX makeup, or what’s left of it anyway.  You see, before we moved last year, I did a MAJOR clean out of my makeup, and it was difficult.  I had A LOT of makeup.  But, I hadn’t been working as a make-up artist for a while, and I decided it was time to purge my kit since we were losing a lot of storage space in our move.

I then organized the makeup itself, tossing anything that was gross, or empty. I discovered that I not only have four pencil sharpeners, but I also have 3 eyelash curlers, and 3 sets of tweezers.  Who knew?!

So I put everything into a category, like in the picture above: tools.

Then I separated out the items I use on a regular/semi-regular basis.

And, the stuff I don’t use so often.

Then I started putting it all away.

Into my large case goes the extra sets of tools, and my least used eye shadow and blush pallets, along with what’s left of my fake eyelash collection.  In that case also stays what’s left of my special FX kit.

Into one of my makeup bags went the less frequently used stuff, including my “dance” makeup.

Into the cute case goes all my “everyday” makeup.  Note, I definitely do not wear makeup every day, or even once a week, really.  It’s rare now that I wear makeup, but I am trying to work on that since I do think that putting in a little more effort into my look will make me feel better.

Once all of that was settled, I set to work cleaning my brushes.  Ideally, you should clean your brushes after each use, or at least once a week.  Sadly, I’d gotten pretty lazy, especially since I hardly wear makeup anymore.  So I was long overdue.

Cleaning brushes is actually really easy. You don’t NEED brush cleaner, but it does help, especially since it’s easy on the hairs in the brush and dries quickly.  However, if you don’t have brush cleaner, you can use baby shampoo and warm water.   Since I do have some brush cleaner left, I simply pour some into a shot glass (any small container will work,) dip the brush in, mix it around and then wipe it out on a rag.

Here’s the final product on its shelf in the bathroom.  Next to the makeup is my makeup remover, and my basket of nail stuff.

On the other shelf, my brushes, pencils, tweezers, mascaras (yes I have like five, I know, it’s a sickness,) and of course my hairdressing shears, because everyone should have a pair.

Once I finished that I moved right onto organizing my closet, and filled a bunch of bags to go to Goodwill, but that’s another post for another day.  It wasn’t until after 6pm that we finally hit up the grocery store.  That will have to be another post too since the organization process took up way more time than I anticipated ;)   Do you use weekends to do big and small organization projects?

Six Pack, And Not The Beer Kind

This morning, I decided to attempt Jillian Michaels‘ 6 Week 6 Pack which is currently available for free on my Exercise TV channel On Demand.  I don’t know exactly what I was expecting, but it was definitely a challenge.  I’d never done any of the Biggest Loser/Jillian/Bob workout videos, but I was pretty impressed.  While there were definitely parts I didn’t love (hello, Burpees,) and definitely parts that were A LOT more challenging than I am able to do yet at 100% (hello, side planks,) I think if I incorporate this into my cross training I’ll be stronger for sure.

Have you tried Jillian’s 6 Week 6 Pack, or 30 Day Shred? It looks like the 30 Day Shred is also part of my On Demand so I may give it a try as well.  I liked how Jillian keeps you motivated, and that the circuits are generally pretty short, but pack a punch.

After my workout I made myself a big yogurt bowl. I didn’t take a picture because I was so hungry I started eating it before it was even put together, but here’s a picture of another bowl I made earlier in the week.

In my bowl went one container of Fage 2% the last bits of my Kashi Go Lean Crunch, some blackberries, blueberries and a small banana, then finally, just to shake things up, a dollop of crunchy peanut butter.  It was delicious, and pretty filling, I wasn’t hungry again until now, when I shoved the rest of my dark chocolate with orange peel into my mouth.

Speaking of yogurt, so far, my favorite has been the Fage 2% for two reasons.  First is taste, second is portion.  I like getting the 9oz containers and just dumping the whole thing into the bowl. It’s so easy. However, they aren’t super cheap, so I also tried purchasing a larger container of Trader Joe’s 2% plain greek yogurt, and I have to say, taste wise it was right up there.

It was also pretty easy to portion out since I was able to eyeball about half the container for one portion.  I’m sure if I got an even bigger tub I could portion out the yogurt ahead of time and it would be just as easy.

After brunch, I worked on a little project I’ve been meaning to do for quite a few weeks.  I went through all the old files I’d been keeping and was able to throw out an entire trash bag worth of old papers and whatnot that I no longer need. It felt pretty good to de-clutter my filing cabinet.  Now it’s some relaxing HGTV time, then later tonight we’re going to an all you can eat Korean BBQ for dinner.  I’m pretty excited!

2009

So, it’s now January 11th and I have yet to purchase a new weekly engagement calender. For the past four, maybe five years I’ve bought a new weekly engagement calender from Barnes and Noble, because they’re the only place I can find the kind of weekly calender I like. I need one page per week, with enough space to write notes to myself. So, today, I went over to The Grove to get my 2009 Weekly Engagement Calendar, only to find that the only theme they have left is Soldiers of the Civil War.

Seriously.

The ONLY weekly engagement calenders in the style that I like left at the Barnes and Nobel at The Grove, features images of Soldiers of the Civil War.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to look at depressing ass images of people who fought in the Civil War all year. I then when to Border’s to see if they had any calendars that would work. They had NOTHING. I mean, ok I get it, it’s now 2 weeks into the new year, but really?! NOTHING left?!

This is bullshit.
