Productivity vs. The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games

Sometime the middle of last year, Travis “read” The Hunger Games series. I say “read,” because Travis doesn’t actually read, he does only books on tape.  Anyway, he read them, and loved them, but I was kind of indifferent to them.  Not that I was 100% not interested, but for the most part, post-apocalyptic literature isn’t my bag.  Then, my girlfriends started reading them, so I got in line for the book sharing and have now finished the first two books in the series. They have completely sucked me in.  Kate delivered the first two books on Thursday night and as of Saturday night I had finished them both.   I’ll be picking up the third book today, and will have to force myself to bed and not stay up late reading.  It will be difficult.  I basically lost the entire day Saturday to Catching Fire.

I found it interesting while reading to see some parallels between The Hunger Games and the Twilight saga.  I have a feeling there is a similar fan base, but also a divided fan base (as there tends to be with things that are similar but also different.)  One parallel I discovered, aside from the obvious love triangle featured in both series, is that both Katniss and Bella feel hugely responsible for the well being of the people they care about, and knowing that whichever person they choose, they will ultimately be leaving another hurt terribly. There is also insecurity in both characters, but this seems to be where the similarities end, and I have a strong feeling that Katniss Everdeen is what Stephenie Meyer wished Isabella Swan actually was.  Where Bella is so plain she is practically devoid of any personality, Katniss explodes with personality, with fervor, with a will to survive.  From the beginning we see both characters are willing to sacrifice everything to save the ones they love, but where Bella fumbles around and seems weak, Katniss is powerful in her resolve.  This is not to say I think Bella Swan is a terrible, irredeemable character, I just find her far less developed than Katniss.

They’ve just started casting for the movie versions of The Hunger Games, so that should be interesting to watch play out.  I keep hoping they have a larger budget than the Twilight films so they get a decent hair/makeup and costume department.

I wasn’t completely unproductive on Saturday actually.  Although the better part of the day and evening was spent reading, I managed to make my first green smoothie.

I followed the recipe Angela posted on Oh, She Glows  only I used chocolate soy milk instead of almond milk, in the hope that the chocolate would make it taste better.  I was pretty nervous it was going to taste like sludge.  I even bought some Chia Seeds for the first time ever at Whole Foods on Friday evening. Have you ever made green smoothies? I’m sure most of you have, I’m pretty tardy to the party ;) See! I ‘m even late using that joke. Totally no longer culturally relevant.  Oh well.

Surprisingly enough, it tasted pretty good!

Even Peanut tried to get in on the action.  It kept me full for several hours which was great. Then I totally ruined my healthy green smoothie by ordering pizza for dinner.  Oops?  I figured it would be ok since I’ve got a 6 mile run planned for this morning. Sometimes a girl just needs some pizza.  Plus it was so hot in the apartment, the mere idea of turning on the stove or oven to cook anything made me feel gross.

Your new movie makes $70mil at the boxoffice it’s opening weekend

and you think no one will see you smokin weed on your front stoop?

Oh Kristen Stewart, you’re not that stupid are you?

Babies, movies, The Jungle Book!

I know, it’s shameful. I haven’t written here in ages. Well, about two weeks which in blog time is practically an eternity.  I don’t really have an excuse other than a certain sense of inertia in my writing/life in general.  I will say however that in the past few weeks I have attended the second to last classes of my first semester at Mt. St. Mary’s Weekend College, changed my major to Social Work, did $30 worth of laundry and have seen the much talked/blogged about Twilight movie.  Also, in that time frame, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz managed to do something as douchey as naming their first born Bronx Mowgli.  I know, I couldn’t believe it either.  But, what can you do…other than blog/talk about it with your friends/co-workers and thank your lucky stars you are not nearly as insane as the two of them?

Anyway, it seems that everyone and their mom has had something to say about Twilight this week and I have to admit, I don’t have much to add.  I enjoyed the movie. Was it campy and sometimes unintentionally hilarious?  Of course it was.  Were the special effects kind of meh? Of course they were.  Did I expect anything less from a movie that was made for $30million?  No.  Would I see it again? Perhaps.

In other movie news, my Amazon.com pre-order of Wall-E  arrived last week and it was glorious.  I made T watch it with me the day it came.  I got weepy in all the same parts I got weepy in the theater.  It was pretty insane.

Upcoming plans include and are not limited to: flying to Phoenix for Thanksgiving tomorrow afternoon, my cousin’s birthday party on Saturday which promises to have BBQ and Flip Cup,  Company Holiday Karaoke Party, High School Musical ON ICE!, Medieval Times, hair cut (yay!), my own personal high school reunion of sorts, flying to Phoenix for Christmas and much, much more.  I’m sure you can all hardly contain yourselves.  The excitement is overwhelming.

MIA

I know, I’ve been horrible about writing here. I apologize.  To say I’ve been busy would be fair, but I shouldn’t shirk my duties here either ;)  It turns out that balancing a full time job, plus school work plus a social life (even one as small and sad as mine) can be a bit difficult at times.  I haven’t been able to do quite as much personal reading as I’d like, and have had to focus my energy onto essays and speeches.

By the way, I have an informational speech due in a few weeks. Any thoughts on what sort of information I should be sharing with my class?

And, just because I can, and I am still as obsessed as ever with Twilight, here is some lovely Edward eye candy for you all.

I have finally finished reading and have re-read parts of the series already in preperation for the upcoming movie.  As November gets closer, I get more and more excited.  Bear with me :)

Obsession

So, I know, I’m late to the Twilight Series obsession party.  I also know that until I picked up Twilight in the stupid bookstore at stupid LAX I was mostly indifferent about the series, if not bordering on annoyed with it’s presence in my occasionally snobby literary peripheral vision.  However, I’ve said it before, and pay attention because it doesn’t happen often, I was wrong.  I am totally obsessed now. And, even though I’m new to the game, I have a few opinions on the trailers etc. that I’ve watched thus far in order to satiate my appetite for all things Twilight.  I’ve also been home sick the past few days, so it’s given me a lot of time to indulge.  This is a dangerous thing.

Anyway, so I’m still not sold on Kristen Stewart.  Not just as Bella, more like….in general.  Granted I’ve only seen her in Into the Wild (which wildly irritated me) and now in the trailers and some interviews for Twilight.  There’s something about her that bugs me.  I think it’s her mannerisms, she reminds me of Jenna Malone who I want to smack in the face with a baseball bat every time I see her in a movie (as the same damn character she always plays).   Moving on to Nikki Reed who I thought was good enough in Thirteen, although it’s hard to critique someone who’s playing out their own life in a film, and who if I remember correctly, knows Catherine Hardwicke (the director for both Thirteen and now Twilight) because she dated her father?

I’m not saying it’s not possible that I’ll see the film and love it.  I’m just saying I’m a little miffed at some of the casting choices.  Whatever.

Now that I’ve finished the series I should be able to redirect my focus on my reading for school.  Sorry Kate Chopin, you are not nearly as enticing as vampire novels. I’m a horrible feminist, aren’t I?

I’ll shut up now and let everyone go back to their normal lives.

my life in lists part 1

New things that I’m into that I can’t explain:

1)

The Twilight Series.  I didn’t even want to read them mostly because everyone and their mom is in love with the books. But, while at LAX, waiting for my flight to New York, I stopped into a Hudson News and succumbed to the frenzy that is “Twilight.”  I have to admit, it’s certainly not the best writing I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.  It’s pretty akin to some of the better fanfic I used to read (oh the shame.)  Even with the writing being only marginally good, I am hooked.  I read the first book in a day and a half (because I started the night before we left NY and finished it on the plane), and read the second book in about 6 hours.  I went to Borders the other day, only to find the third book is sold out at that location.  I was seriously bummed.  I can not explain.

2) WordPlay on Facebook.  I blame M. She sent me an invite and I am now a slave to this game.  I kick myself every time I forget easy three letter words within the series of letters.  My high score is currently that of “Teacher.”  I must beat this score and become whatever it is that D  has become with her super duper high score. I think she cheated.

3) Payless Shoes.  Seriously, when did Payless get such cute shoes?  Until a few weeks ago, the last time I’d set foot in a Payless was probably in high school. I found two pairs of adorable shoes that I now wear all the time about two weeks ago.  Way to go Payless.
